Ph.D. Programme

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Nagpur Campus, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) (SIU) offers research programmes leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the Faculty of Management only.

  • We offer both Full Time/ Part Time Programmes (Ph. D. Cannot be offered in distance education mode).

  • PG degree is needed with 55 % marks must. PG Diploma of IIMs, XLRI are eligible, CA/CS with 55 % marks are eligible. Those who are holding PG diplomas from other institutions have to submit equivalence as given by statutory bodies like AICTE/ UGC/ BCI. Approval given AICTE/ Equivalence given AIU is not admissible for eligibility.

  • Experience not compulsory. Graduates with long experience are not eligible.

  • Those holding NET/ SET/ GATE/M Phil are exempted from the entrance exam. But personal interviews are compulsory. The score must be valid on date of application. Long experience does not entitle any exemption from the entrance test.

  • The programme flow is PhD Entrance Test- Personal Interview- Admission- Coursework- Proposal Presentation (leading to confirmation) – Actual Research Work ( Including Publications)- Mid Review – Pre-submission Seminar- Thesis Submission- Thesis Examination- Viva-voce Examination- Provisional Award of Degree- Convocation.

  • Coursework decided by Deans of faculties. 75 % attendance is compulsory. UGC regulations warrant regular classes. Those who have completed M Phil with research methodology are exempted from coursework.

  • PhD is not a fixed duration programme, and UGC regulations warrant a minimum time of 2 years after confirmation. Max time allowed to submit the thesis is 7 years after getting confirmation in the programme.

  • A few full-time students may be offered JRF ship on a merit basis.

Introduction

The structured PhD program under the Faculty of Management (FoM) provides flexibility in multidisciplinary research that focuses on innovative solutions to real-world industry problems as well as societal issues. FoE has motivated intellectual faculty who consider research as an integral part of their responsibilities and publish research papers in highly reputed journals.

Simultaneously, faculty is also engaged in different externally / internally funded projects therein, producing promising results. FoM ensures that the infrastructural facilities, including the online data base, are made available to the researchers and encourages them to file patents on their findings.

FoM has also initiated the collaboration of researcher from reputed universities abroad by appointing the faculty from these universities as co-supervisor to their PhD scholars.

Focus Areas of Faculty of Management

Some of the focus areas of the faculty of management include:

  1. General Management: The General management has a focus on business environment and management practices. A doctoral degree in this area will focus on general management aspects and aspects related to managing organizations effectively.

  2. Marketing Management: Has a focus on the development and implementation of marketing strategies, understanding consumer behavior, and building strong brands. A doctoral degree in this area will focus on topics related to marketing, advertising, digital marketing, brand management etc.

  3. Human Resource Management and Organisational Behaviour: Has a focus on human resource management that focus on developing skills in talent management, employee engagement, and organizational behaviour, talent acquisition, employee relations etc.

  4. Operations Management: Has a focus on operations management with a focus on optimizing business processes, improving supply chain efficiency, and managing quality. operations management, logistics, supply chain management etc .

  5. Financial Management: Financial management has a focus on financial analysis, investment management, and corporate finance, investment banking, financial planning, corporate finance etc.

  6. Agri Business Management: Agri Business Management has a focus on the business aspects of agriculture, including marketing, finance, and supply chain management. A doctoral degree in this area will focus on agribusiness, agricultural marketing, and rural development, farm management, agricultural finance, and commodity trading.

Fellowship

Symbiosis International ( Deemed University) encourages Ph.D candidates to enrol as Full Time Ph.D students.

  • The scheme is open to competent and qualified candidates to undertake full time advanced studies and research leading to Ph.D. degree under the University

  • SIU also encourages independent fellowship holders (CSIR/DBT/DST/etc) to apply. Scientists with funded projects are welcome to be associated.

Ph.D. Coursework

Pre-Ph.D. coursework is an important matter of concern for new students who wish to enrol on the Ph.D. programme of SIU.

The following important points be noted.

  • M. Phil. degree holders having Research Methodology with B+ grades are exempted from coursework. The decision on exemption from coursework shall be conveyed to individual Deans as per the rulebook after ascertain the eligibility.

  • The students who have completed Ph. D from other Universities shall be exempted from coursework.

  • Those who have completed coursework in other Universities and taken fresh admissions in SIU Ph. D. Programme are not eligible for exemption from coursework.

  • The admitted students have to complete the coursework in the assigned duration (generally between Sept to May every year). The exact scheduling will be communicated by the respective Deans.

  • As per UGC norms, the coursework has to be conducted in face to face mode and on weekdays.

  • The coursework of 16 credits is compulsory as per the UGC norms. Ensure the requisite attendance (min 75 %) and completion of assignments as per the given time schedule communicated by the concerned Deans. Minimum passing marks are 55 % in each subject. Refer to the Ph.D Rulebook for details.

Eligibility And Reservation Policy

A candidate seeking admission to the Ph.D. programme must satisfy any one of the following eligibility requirements:

  1. A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or A 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/ Differently-Abled.

  2. Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/ Differently-Abled.

  3. Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme.

A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/Differently-Abled.

Note:

International candidates (NRIs, Foreign Nationals and PIOs who have obtained Master’s degree from foreign universities) are required to qualify IELTS with 6.5 score or IELA Test (Band 3) of SIU ELTIS, an equivalent test for English language proficiency. Please note that candidates holding Professional Qualifications/ Diplomas/ Post Graduate Diplomas/ Any other qualifications will need to submit the proof of equivalence of the qualifications to master’s Degree from a Statutory Bodies like UGC/AICTE/BCI/MCI etc

How To Apply

  • The process of application is completely online. The candidate is not required to submit any hard copy of application to the University.

  • The applications will be live by the end of April every year and open till end of May every year. The University will put up the advertisement on the website of SIU, SCRI and all constituents of the University.

  • Check their eligibility as per the Ph.D. Rulebook. Master’s degree in relevant discipline is compulsory. Experience is optional.

  • Candidates not possessing a Master’s Degree awarded by the Universities shall be required to produce equivalence of qualifications from statutory bodies as per the UGC norms/ Ph. D. Rule Book. Please note that equivalence of degree and approval of the institute/ programme are not the same.
